Green roofs are an integral part of modern construction in the city.
Green roofs insulate buildings, control storm water and become wildlife habitats.
The composition of green roofs has evolved over the past 10 years. Heavier substrates have given way to lighter ones.
They are complex spaces and do not receive the attention they deserve.
We have developed techniques to improve green roofs which may have deteriorated since they were constructed.
We use a range of plant species which can cope with the seasonal variation and maximise diversity for wildlife.
The roof above, suffered from a substrate with a high ph level. It was also installed in early summer and not irrigated. There was high failure rate of the original plants. After about five years lavender began to self sow itself, Iris germanica had developed significantly and other plants took hold. It is a seasonal roof and is dependent good spring rain for a spectacular show.
